The first post!

We (Mark Amos & Alex Freeman) are cycling across the entire breadth of the USA. This is over 3,800 miles in order to raise funds for agencies involved in the disaster relief effort in Asia. We are especially interested in helping the people of Sri-Lanka as Alex's father was born there.

The charities we hope to benefit are UNICEF, Medecins Sans FrontiƩres and Global Care.

UNICEF and MSF are international charities. UNICEF is the UN children's agency, MSF sends doctors and nurses to the most dangerous and inhospitable places in the world. Global Care is a Coventry based charity, which provides care for vulnerable children worldwide - notably the rebuilding of the Morning Star School and Clinics that provide care and education to Sri-Lanka's orphans which were completely devestated in the recent tsunami disaster.

So far we have had many generous sponsors and the sponsorship keeps coming in! Every penny helps, so if you are reading this and haven't sponsored us yet then why not drop us an email pledging however much or little you could spare?

So, this is our "blogsite" which is basically an online diary that we will be able to update as we progress on our journey to San-Francisco. The diary will be updated as often as possible with photos and reports so that anyone who is interested can keep up to date! We start the ride on the 30th March and we will be arriving back in the UK on the 25th June.

Below is a route map that we will update as we make progress so that everyone has some idea of how far we have travelled and which states we are heading through.

Oh and by the way this blog site will allow you to post comments too! So if there's anything anyone wants to add or comment on then just go for it! - but keep it clean please.

Thanks for your texts Mark, we're really glad to hear your ride has started well. We wish you and Alex a wonderful journey during which we are sure you will see many fantastic sights and meet many "interesting" people. In your texts it would help if you said where you are so that we can keep track of you on our map.

Keep on riding!!!!!

Mum & Dad.

Hi Alex,

Your Dad has just emailed me the url of your blog and I've been enjoying reading about your progress. Don't envy you all that rain and uphill cycling though!

I've added the site to my Favourites and will be following the trip with great interest. I have some ties with Sri Lanka and hope you raise lots of money for the The Morning Star School and your other charities.

Good luck!

Ann Dickinson
